Client i work for is a reputed bank. My area is RISK and will continue to work in this portfolio for as long as i continue with infosys. am an oracle certified associate (1z0 007 & 1z0 0031).I have a gud understanding of warehousing life cycle & been using oracle/perl/unix/ so far for ETL purposes. I also have strong understanding of the fundamentals of banking & fin. sector and am looking to continue in future also in the same area and also prefer IT industry to others. If i do an MS i wud apply for fall 09(completing 2 yrs wid infosys) but i might always want to add MBA later on to it. but then when will i settle down in this scenario? maybe i didn t explain my idea well - all i want is to read name of another file from user if the first file that the user typed doesn t exit thats all--

for example - if the user typed "file.txt" and this file doesn t exit it ask him to enter another name- if after that he entered "fffffff.txt" and that doesn t exit too - it asks him again to enter a third name -- and so on- until he types a file that exit---

I used to do a lot of programming in the olden days before the dinosaur and the internet. I did dBase- basic- foxpro- a lot of VB- and some others. In the past 10 to 15 years- I ve gotten away from it and have done more programming management than anything else. I d like to get back into coding- but there seems to be a lot of choices.

What is the general consensus for a good programming path? C?- Java?- Ajax?- Python?- Perl?- .Net?- something else?

Well I am going to start and engineering degree in October. I have the whole summer and basically will have a lot of free time. I am running Debian Etch and Lenny. I have a Windows XP Pro CD (not installed) so I can do any programming under Windows as well. Basically I want to be able to write small programs that would help me do a task. I am also aiming at understanding linux configuration files and writing scripts. I was thinking of starting with Python and then C. Then I read on the internet that nowadays most people messing with computers should know PHP and HTML. Is this true? I am also not sure whether I should learn Python or Perl (or Lisp)? I will have at most 3 months so I need to make the right choice.
I have done some Pascal but it was just a little bit and I don t remember almost anything. Otherwise I am really good at learning from books and you just name a book and I will find it.

in fact the 1st perl script stores the output in a file.Let s say it stores the output in "file.txt".I want the 2nd perl script to - run the 1st script- read the output from the file and then give an output like "hello there". A small example would be more appreciated. thanks in advance..

I m using Windows XP and I m trying to install Perl for my Apache server- but it s just a bunch of files that I m not sure what to do with. How do I install it?

I can t understand what a lot of it is doing such as uc in $jobName = uc($jobName);
and the split and s/\_DEP$/i/;

Is there any good websites that explain these- such as
elsif ($_ =~ /^Command Line\: /)
$freq =~ s/^\s+//;
I understand it is <the line read> <equal and matches?> <something about commandline.. but not sure exactly>

I want to know what all the possible things inside the / / expression. THANKS!!!
